Nashville East resident Aaron Lee Tasjan has long been a favourite of Americana UK, and with 12 albums to his name, including his latest Get Over It, Underdog, and approaching 40, he is no longer the young kid on the block. While he is recognised as a songwriter’s songwriter who is a great collaborator, and brings his own wry take and slant to his folk-based story songs, the fact that he had been on the musical treadmill for 20 years and was still a cult artist as far as the wider listening public is concerned was beginning to weigh heavily on his mind. When he started questioning himself, his solution was to lean on his friend and mentor, the late, great Todd Snider, to help him regain his songwriting confidence. Aaron had produced Todd’s last album, 2025’s High Lonesome, and Then Some, and Todd managed to help him get back on track with his songwriting to such an extent that Get Over It, Underdog is not only possibly Aaron’s best album to date, but it is also a fitting homage to Todd Snider. Americana UK’s Martin Johnson caught up with Aaron over Zoom to discuss his new album and his indebtedness to Todd Snider. He takes the opportunity to give some of the real-life backstories to some of his new songs. He also shares a great story about when Todd took him to meet Guy Clark, who, by that time, was confined to a wheelchair as his condition was progressively worsening. As Aaron tells it, Guy had accepted him as a songwriter of note and at some point asked him to bend down so he could speak into Aaron’s ear, who was expecting some songwriting advice. What Guy said to him was pure Guy Clark, making the story a bit of a classic from both artists’ perspectives.
