Mesmerising squares of light flash behind them as guitarist Mike Stringer brings a bevy of sound effects and riffery. Jaded, The Void and Circle With Me work their magic, and people dance and jump, minds luminescent with pleasure. When Holy Roller comes, there’s not just a pit, the entire floor becomes a chaotic, whirling whole. It’s catharsis, fans of all ages and fashion inclinations letting something once tethered fly free.
Things draw to a close with the softly spun Crystal Roses and new song Mourning, the latter darker and denser than its perfectly decent studio version. In a surprisingly heartfelt address, Courtney’s shell briefly cracks as she describes her band’s music as “about feeling like you can never leave the island. We need to wash away this era we’re living in and wash away all the pain we’ve felt.” This wonderful collective exorcism is complete.
