Be Good Tanyas release 25th Anniversary vinyl edition of debut album Blue Horse

Twenty-five years after The Be Good Tanyas introduced their singular take on folk music to the world, the celebrated Vancouver group has announced a special 25th anniversary edition of their debut album, Blue Horse, arriving November 20th, 2026, via Birthday Cake Records. The album previously had a very limited vinyl run, and this new edition features archival photos and a new introduction from the group. The album can be pre-ordered here.

Originally independently released in Canada before finding an international audience in 2001 via Nettwerk Records, Blue Horse introduced The Be Good Tanyas’ intimate, unvarnished combination of traditional folk, deep country, Appalachian, and blues. Across songs including The Littlest Birds, Only in the Past, Light Enough to Travel Rain and Snow, and The Coo Coo Bird, the record brought traditional folk music into conversation with a distinctly contemporary sensibility, anchored by the group’s loose instrumentation and unmistakable vocal harmonies.

The album emerged from remarkably modest circumstances; in fact, the first few songs were recorded for free, live-off-the-floor at a local recording school as a student project. Later, the band finished the record in a handful of evenings and late-night sessions at Futcher’s small home studio on the edge of East Vancouver. The record’s homespun character was its sound: warm, spacious, and imperfect in all the right places, as though the listener had stumbled into a room where the songs were already being played.

The album also captured a particular moment in Vancouver’s late-’90s and early-’00s roots community. Frazey Ford, Samantha Parton, and Trish Klein, joined on the recording by Jolie Holland, approached traditional material not as museum pieces but as living songs, placing them alongside original compositions that felt capable of belonging to the same lineage.
“I fell through the cracks of the rave generation,” remembers Trish. “In the late 90’s, when others were nightclubbing, I was at the library, looking for banjo sheet music. When the band came together, it was a revelation to find others like me who just wanted to play old songs and harmonize on my front porch.”

“As a teenager, I became obsessed with old blues and gospel music. Bessie Smith, Mahalia Jackson. I loved the rawness and truth in the music,” says Frazey. “In 1999, I casually sat in harmonizing and trading songs with the Be Good Tanyas, who were old friends, in living rooms and cafes. It was almost like a study group of 30’s music, the warmth and harmonies reminding me of the music I’d grown up singing. We slowly wove in our own songwriting, as is the tradition, to absorb what came before and bring it into the present.”

Upon its release, the album quickly travelled far beyond the circumstances in which it was made. What began as a low-budget independent recording earned international acclaim and introduced The Be Good Tanyas to audiences well beyond Vancouver, one of the biggest territories being the UK. This began almost by chance, when Bob Harris stumbled across their album in a Nashville record shop and was instantly won over, playing it constantly on his Nashville broadcasts and becoming the first UK DJ to put The Be Good Tanyas on the air. He remained one of the band’s most consistent supporters throughout their career, championing them regularly on Bob Harris Country, including broadcast interviews and numerous live performances.
