Sony Updates Its Premium Walkman Range With Three New Music Players

Sony’s latest Walkman players pair dedicated audio hardware with Wi-Fi streaming, larger screens and updated sound processing. With US prices starting at $1,899.99, the range targets listeners willing to spend serious money on a music-focused device.

Sony Electronics has announced three new premium Walkman models: the NW-WM1ZM3, NW-WM1AM3 and NW-ZX900. The update combines downloaded music playback with streaming apps, keeping dedicated listening at the centre of the experience.

The flagship NW-WM1ZM3 uses a gold-plated, oxygen-free copper chassis and KIMBER KABLE internal wiring. The NW-WM1AM3 and NW-ZX900 pair aluminium-alloy main chassis with gold-plated copper rear sections. Sony says these material choices help improve rigidity, grounding and audio performance.

    Updated Audio Processing

All three players feature Sony’s S-Master HX digital amplifier and DSD Remastering Engine, which converts PCM audio into an 11.2MHz DSD stream. The updated range extends that processing to music streamed over Wi-Fi as well as downloaded tracks.

The amplifier also features a look-ahead noise shaper, which Sony says improves its handling of rapid changes in audio. The two WM1 models receive revised power circuitry, while the ZX900 adopts selected components used in the higher-end players.

These are engineering changes rather than a guarantee of a particular listening experience: Sony’s claims about greater clarity, lessened noise and improved dynamics remain manufacturer assessments.

    Bigger Screens, Premium Prices

The NW-WM1ZM3 and NW-WM1AM3 feature 5.5-inch displays, while the NW-ZX900 has a 5-inch screen. A customisable Walkman home screen and larger album artwork put browsing and playback controls closer to the foreground.

Sony quotes up to 35 hours of local MP3 playback for the WM1 models and 40 hours for the ZX900, measured using its own music app with a balanced connection. Actual battery life varies with settings, format and use.

Announced US suggested retail prices are:

Sony’s US announcement lists all three for pre-order; it did not include UK pricing or availability.

The range makes Sony’s proposition clear: a separate device, dedicated audio circuitry and a substantial budget for listening. Whether those upgrades justify the cost is the question a spec sheet alone cannot answer.
