Eight-legged horses, murder and doomed gods: Amon Amarths guide to the mythology behind their new album

“Kvasir’s Blood is actually about the Mead Of Poetry, which is one of the most famous stories in Norse mythology. Kvasir is born from the spit of the Æsir and Vanir gods, who were at war with each other, but they make peace. To honour that peace, they spit in a cup and from that cup, Kvasir is born as the wisest person in the universe. He travels around giving counsel and advice to people, and he comes across these two dwarves Galar and Fjalar, who decide to kill him. From Kvasir’s blood, they make the Mead Of Poetry.

“Now, you would think that the story would end there, but these dwarfs are really mean creatures and they kill the family of the giant Suttungr just for sport. He hunts them down and captures them and to save their lives, the dwarves offer him the Mead. Odin learns about this Mead, and through murder, deceit and seduction, he forces his way into Suttungr’s mountain home, steals the Mead and brings it back to Asgard and in doing so, he spills a little bit of the Mead which spills down to mankind, and that’s why we have poetry.”

The Allfather Awakens is out now via Metal Blade.
