Few pieces of DJ hardware have stayed culturally relevant for more than five decades without becoming museum pieces.

Technics is leaning into that longevity with a special all-vinyl set from Japanese DJ ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U, filmed at Tokyo Tower ahead of the SL-1200 Series’ 55th anniversary in 2027.

The performance will premiere globally on YouTube on August 18, 2026 at 8:00 PM UTC, marking the latest chapter in a turntable line first introduced in 1972.

The SL-1200 became a DJ standard through its direct-drive precision and durability, with more than 3.5 million units shipped.

For the anniversary, ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U delivers an exclusive vinyl-only set bridging Technics’ analogue legacy with contemporary club culture.

The Osaka-born, Tokyo-based artist has built an international profile through performances across major festivals and underground electronic music spaces, including Coachella and Berlin Atonal.

The Tokyo Tower setting gives the campaign a deliberately visual scale, but the stronger idea sits underneath it: Technics is not trying to reinvent the SL-1200 as something new.

For FM PRO TECH, that is the interesting part.

Legacy music technology stays valuable when artists continue finding reasons to use it. The SL-1200’s anniversary is less about nostalgia than continuity — hardware designed in another era still functioning as part of contemporary DJ culture.
