    Fontaines DC

    Dopamine Chamber

    LP CD DL

    Released 16 October 2026

    ★★★★★ 5/5

These are, of course, strange and disconcerting times and on this dark forest masterpiece Fontaines DC have caught the contradictory mood with an album that defines the moment with a groundbreaking brilliance.

Music can help shake off the madness with high spectacle or an immersive, deeply personal trip. It can also reflect the contradictory dark energy of the moment and somehow turn it into a soundtrack. With enough genius involved, that can propel a band towards becoming one of the biggest groups in the world.

We first wrote about Fontaines on Louder Than War back in January 2015, when we were lining up their debut single for our record label. Even then, the songs and ambition were there. They have come a very, very long way since those early days in Dublin.

What excited us then was the sense of possibility. There was something happening in those songs that demanded attention. Looking back from here, that early encounter feels like the opening paragraph of a story that the band are still finding increasingly unexpected ways to write.

Now on the brink of becoming the worldwide band of the moment, Fontaines D.C. are pursuing their own agenda, confounding expectations and dismantling their sound to create new versions of themselves. It is a constant and breathtaking process. Each breakthrough seems to give them permission to venture further.

Having transformed themselves from Dublin post-punk insurgents into festival headliners with Romance, their fifth album, Dopamine Chamber, arrives with dark, brooding and captivating songs that question the pleasures and distractions of an increasingly fractured world.

These are songs with the ambition to fill stadiums and sit at number one whilst questioning the culture that puts them there. That contradiction gives the record its bite. Success brings a bigger platform, and Fontaines seem determined to use every inch of it. They are the ghosts in the machine, a band that answers back, making music that measures up to the moment.

The interesting question is how much uncertainty a huge band can carry with it. At this level, familiarity becomes a powerful currency. Audiences arrive with an idea of who you are and what they want you to deliver. Fontaines keep disturbing that arrangement. Their growing stature makes the refusal to settle all the more compelling.

Grian Chatten remains central to that process. His presence connects the band’s different incarnations, giving their expanding musical vocabulary a recognisable personality. There is room around that personality for the rest of the band to keep changing the scenery, testing how far they can travel together.

The meeting with Rosalía on ‘Where Is Gone?’ feels particularly apt: two artists whose appeal is bound up with their appetite for transformation. It opens another possibility for Fontaines, another route beyond the boundaries that once seemed to define them.

Their early work had the energetic rush of frenetic post-punk. Their development raises a more interesting question than whether they still sound like that young Dublin band: how do you preserve the impulse that started everything while allowing the music to grow?

For Fontaines, adventure increasingly seems to be the continuity. The willingness to move is becoming as much a part of their identity as any particular guitar sound or vocal inflection.

That is what makes this stage of their story so absorbing. Their size grows, their sense of daring increases and the possibilities multiply. The space they have earned becomes somewhere to experiment.

Dopamine Chamber walks the tightrope between stadium ambition and the deeply personal, between the urge to reach everyone and the need to keep something awkward and unresolved at its heart. Back in 2015, we heard a band worth getting excited about. The excitement now is in wondering how far they will take this—and how many people they can take with them.

A Plea From Louder Than War

Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.

To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
