Killian Walsh opens his record box to reveal 10 tracks that reflect the foundations of his sound and the influences behind his evolving musical identity. Drawing on a variety of electronic influences, these selections highlight a focus on rhythm, tension, and emotional depth that also informs his forthcoming album, ‘Ise’. Shaped during a period of personal loss and reflection, the project draws on a wide spectrum of electronic styles while also reflecting his background in traditional Irish music. Grounded in raw, analogue textures and lived experience, these tracks represent key moments and ideas that continue to guide Killian Walsh both in the studio and on the dancefloor.
Track 1: The Moon & the Sun – Avus – Superstition Records.
The driving force of this song always gets me. It’s peak time and focuses me. When I hear it each time I’m back on the dance floor, lights flashing in the flow of dance with no thoughts but the beat and the acid line and not a care in the world!
Track 2: Breeder – The Chain – Rhythm Syndicate.
The attack in this track is fantastic. It has really shown me the importance of when you bring a new element into a track that there can be an answer of some sort; love the variance, cutoff, and attack in the hi-hats, it flows great.
Track 3: Richie Hawtin – Orange1 – Minus.
When I heard this track first, I understood what techno was. That driving kick drum with elements in exactly the right place, with repetition that on the dance floor creates a type of trance, and with the perfectly timed cutoff and volume control to build tension and release
Track 4: Ada – MAPs Remix – Areal Records.
If it’s sunrise or sunset, if you’re playing Techno, House, or Trance, at the end of it all, when we are together as one, being brought on a journey by the DJ, it’s about the shared experience; this song speaks to that connection.
Track 5: London Funk Ensemble, Fabiano – Joker Original mix – Zayo.
This is one of those tracks I always fall back on when changing pace or to reset. I love the toms on this, and how subtly they drive it. At the breakdown, it’s the perfect track to increase the BPM by 3 and pick up the pace for the rest of the set.
Track 6: Alex Celler, Anthea – Ceadmon Loop – Cecille.
I always love a track that makes your head & dance spin. The build-up here is great and thoughtful, the elements are pure with a kick drum that’s musical, and when the song kicks in, I am spinning and lost in it.
Track 7: Erla’s Waltz – Olafur Arnalds – Erased Tapes.
There is a sadness and a reflective quality to this track that brings an emotional element to any set, and a release, I believe that is needed, and gives space to settle before we kick back into the next track, which is all the more better because of it.
Track 8: Gabriel Ananda – Doppelwhipper (Live) – Platzhirsch Schallplatten.
A beautifully constructed full track with all elements perfectly present, you can feel the raw moment that is achieved in this performance, and it’s not predictable, and the sounds get right in to you head for a beautiful release and dance.
Track 9: J.Manuel – Flowers Forever – SPANDAU20.
One of those tracks that stretches the norm, it’s refreshing and thoughtful, and has a very subtle drive to it, which I really connect to. The way the Kick is talking to you and guiding you is great; there is a freedom to it, and you feel it!
Track 10: Serum – Black Metal – Horizons Music.
For me, this track is timeless. I adore the bass line drive, the use of the live drums, and the way the song hits the peak volume in the mix, which works and gives you that goose-bump feeling where the hairs are standing on the back of your neck, perfect for the drum and bass lovers out there!
