Live Review: Pixies [York Barbican] May 20, 2026 – Soundsphere magazine

Tonight, The Barbican is packed, and it’s good to see. York sees the occasional renowned rock artist come through, but it happens too rarely in our view. Here, we see a great example of what’s possible if the venue gets opened up to more possibilities like this. There are so many longtime fans of the band, and alternative music in attendance.

Starting off are electro-prog-rockers, GANS who create a beautiful racket, featuring catchy bangers like ‘Dirty Cowboy’ and ‘I Think I Like You’. If the organisers wanted a band to start the night off in electric fashion, they certainly exceeded here. One of the best bands we’ve seen this year, for sure. It’s not hard to see why they are being heralded as one of the most important rock acts in the UK in 2026. This was something special. Exceptional even.

You can tell the audience realises how cool this is. A band of Pixies’ stature showing up in a venue that holds less than 2000 people. It’s a big deal, and Black Francis’ crew really do seem to enjoy themselves, starting off with a relaxed version of ‘Wave Of Mutilation’ (which they follow up with a fully-energised version later), and hit the other classics, ‘Monkey Gone To Heaven’, ‘Here Comes Your Man’, and ‘Gouge Away’. There’s a bunch of new-ish stuff in the set too (‘Vegas Suite’, ‘Chicken’ and ‘Motoroller’) , and most of it lands with the audience. As we said, it feels like the band is chilling here (aside from a ferocious Jesus and Mary Chain cover of ‘Head On’), and fortunately, the audience is here for it – for the vibes, as it were. It is a set packed with fun (including Joey [Santiago – lead guitar] playing notes with his hat), as much as it is energy, and that is all we can ask for from the Bostonian alt-rock icons.

An overwhelmingly positive night on the whole for music in York, and Yorkshire. If the Pixies can get here for their first show ever in the area, then what’s next? HEY! Who knows?
