A few years ago, at a local gig to see the Pennsylvania band The Stray Birds, the crowd was overall polite and receptive to the music; however, let us just say they needed to warm up. The band led by the wonderful Maya de Vitry launched into a version of Down In The Willow Garden. A traditional Appalachian murder ballad, also known as Rose Connelly. The crowd absolutely loved it, and band member Oliver Craven commented that at last they had found the audience’s level. Why are murder ballads so fascinating that onlookers will sit up and notice? Paul Slade…
Photo by Raph PHThe tribute album seems to have leapt in popularity in recent times. The tribute element can take numerous forms: celebrating, honouring an influential artist, raising the profile of an artist, raising money for good causes (including the artist concerned if, for example, they have become unable to work through illness), or because it’s a ‘fun’ thing to do. In some cases, the rationale is not immediately apparent; think Madison Cunningham and Andrew Bird’s 2024 release, Cunningham Bird, which is a cover of the 1973 LP by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, Buckingham Nicks; or the 2015 cover…

It’ll take some sort of miracle to top Rush’s emotional return to the stage on Sunday night, but every new show will see a new set of equally emotional fans take their seats, determined to make their own memories and delighted that Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee have returned to the stage. On night one, new drummer Anika Nilles quietened the ever-dwindling number of doubters with an extraordinarily well-received performance. Geddy Lee appeared triumphantly happy and sounded in fine voice. Alex Lifeson, who said as recently as 2024 that he had “no interest” in touring again, looked like he couldn’t wait…

Perfectly recreating your favourite patches is a great way to learn how to program synths. But it’s not the only way, so this month we’re taking a different approach. The plan is: we have no plan… There are two ways to approach music-making. First, go in with an idea… a goal… even a plan. This is the efficient way. The way that always yields finished tracks and meets deadlines. But it’s often the least fun way, the least creatively interesting. It suits our algorithmic world, where everything has to sound like something else that sells. The second way involves going…
Harmonies to the fore in Boston eight-piece’s swift sophomore album. You would have to be of a certain vintage to recognise where Boston-based Other Brother Darryl may have garnered their moniker. If it means nothing, it means you clearly weren’t of an age to have either been aware of or old enough to have appreciated the comic genius that was Bob Newhart. Anyway. 1980s sitcom. Look it up. Band name aside, this eight-piece indie group have wasted no time in releasing their second album, Hey Yeah Hey, coming just a year or so after their very well-received debut, Roll Shine Roll. It…
