Photo by Neilson HubbardIn March, we put out a request for short fiction written around the subject of americana. The first to answer our call was one of our favourite singer/songwriters, Dean Owens. He also appeared on our Podcast chatting with Keith Hargreaves recently. Listen to that here. While we don’t usually endorse Spotify as a platform, he has created a playlist there to go along with the story, which you can find here. The Motel And The Highway An original short story by Dean OwensJohnny left Jessica in the motel room and headed out onto Highway 395. London Homesick Blues appears on Jerry Jeff Walker’s iconic 1973 live album, ¡Viva Terlingua!(1973). Recorded in Luckenbach, Texas, with The Lost Gonzo Band, the song was written and sung by band member Gary P. Nunn. It is famously known as being the theme song for the TV show Austin City Limits from 1977 to 2004. Nunn played piano in the famed Lost Gonzo Band of troubadour Jerry Jeff Walker. In this video clip, Nunn is offered centre stage by Walker to sing his signature song. The peculiarity is that the song became as indelibly associated with Walker as was Mr…

Jamie Lenman has announced his new album Puke, due for release on 6 August, alongside the release of a blistering new single and video, ‘You’re Nothing’. The track arrives as the latest preview of Lenman’s upcoming project, following recent single ‘Not Likely’, and continues the artist’s stripped-back, aggressively direct approach to songwriting. The new material will be released exclusively via Bandcamp, with a pay-what-you-want model that Lenman says has become central to funding his independent output. ‘You’re Nothing’ is a confrontational, fast-moving track that sees Lenman channel frustration into sharp lyrical critique. Speaking about the song’s themes, he explained that…

Toledo rock mainstays Citizen have shared their new single ‘Halcyon Blues’, the title track from their upcoming album of the same name, set for release on 7 August via Run For Cover Records. Arriving alongside a new video, the track follows recent single ‘Highs and Lows’ and offers a more stripped-back, emotionally expansive side of the band’s evolving sound. Where its predecessor leaned into punchy alternative rock, ‘Halcyon Blues’ unfolds with a slower, more reflective intensity, building from intimate verses into a wide, atmospheric chorus that highlights the band’s growing melodic scope. New York indie band Glimmer have returned with their first new material since last year’s debut album Get Weak, unveiling the hazy, sun-drenched single ‘Someday Sunshine’. Photo by Luke Ivanovich Arriving alongside a new video, the track leans into a softer, more dream-pop-influenced direction for the band, while still retaining the fuzzed-out guitars and driving rhythmic pulse that defined their earlier releases. The result is a more spacious and atmospheric sound, built around swirling guitar layers and melancholic vocals that evoke the blurred nostalgia of long summer days. ‘Someday Sunshine’ marks a subtle but noticeable evolution in Glimmer’s sonic identity.…

Photo: Damu MalikLet’s just start with this: Eilen Jewell has one of the smoothest voices in popular music; she sings with a jazzy tinge; she can sing honky-tonk without a twang; she can interpret rock’n’roll or country or blues, with a powerful voice that can soar when necessary and whisper softly too. Perhaps the closest voice to hers might be Madeleine Peyroux, but throughout her catalogue, you can hear any number of other influences from Judee Sill to Bonnie Raitt to Billie Holiday. She has made ten classy and clever albums, seven of largely original songs that she has written,…

We’re here to talk about the band’s latest record, The Change Is Me– a release that feels like it’s been dragged out of the darkest corners of the mind, but somehow still points toward something like hope. Not the flimsy, Instagram-ready kind, but the uncomfortable, honest, “this might never be perfect and that’s okay” kind. “I feel like I never reach 100% happiness,” Tim tells me, matter-of-fact. “I can be doing my favourite thing with my favourite people and still… I’m good, I’m enjoying myself, but there’s always this cloak of existential dread.” That tension – the joy vs horror,…
